Big Bro Gets Googley

When I tell you I’ve never gone in for conspiracy theories, I’m being very serious. About five minutes ago, however, I changed my mind.

Perhaps it’s not so much a “conspiracy” as a blatent purchasing of a service by a government agency or a corporate entity operating at the behest of one. Below is the warning – something I’ve actually never seen until today, and which, upon comparison, other search engines did not exhibit:

slide1Underneath the heading, Citizens for Health on New Food Safety Bill, there was a “warning” stating, “This site may harm your computer.” I dug a little deeper in some message boards on the topic, and it seems this pseudo-hack can be done by injecting index.html pages with new code at the bottom.

Hmm…warning2Because then, when you click through to override the warning, you STILL get waylaid by a subsequent Google screen. I’m unconvinced that Google is selling this service. There’s too much risk, given the PR climate of their China and recent UK issues. Smells like an industrial ag hack job to me. Anyone??

Off to rent Silkwood now. (Sigh).

I Heart Ray Lamontagne

Is anyone else besotted with the somber, grizzled one? I was listening to Gossip in the Grain for the thousandth time and actually heard the lyrics to track 6, which as it turns out, is a tribute to Meg White. (Sorry for being not-so-quick-on-the-draw-McGraw, people; I’ve been in Farm to Plate-planning-land!)

I really don’t know much about Lamontagne. Yes, I know there’s a thing called Wikipedia for that, but I just don’t have the time, folks. If someone could keep an eye on his tour schedule for me, though, that’d be great. I see he doesn’t have any upcoming TX tour dates, and given the amount of travel I’ve been undertaking and have happening later in the year, I’m keen to stay put for a while. Oh, but he definitely lives on a farm in Maine. Swoon.

Israel Update

My trip to the Holy Land with my folks was amazing. Pics are in Flickr feed>

People have asked what my favorite part was – it’s impossible to narrow down. I really liked the Garden of Gethsemane and all the miracle sites flanking the Sea of Galilee. Standing above the plane of Armageddon (“Tel Meggido”) was sobering, as was the garden tomb.

The food was a mixture of roasted vegetables and the kind of fried things other nationalities perceive Americans will eat. I managed.

It was disappointing to see all our fast food chains right in the heart of Jerusalem amid the ancient historical sites; and processed food is being heavily marketed to children, as evidenced in bags of chips bearing cartoon character images I brought back to the office yesterday. On a happier note, we’re enjoying dates and sesame seed bars.
